Some weekend getaways take weeks to plan and others take mere minutes.

This one came together on a Thursday night and less than 24 hours later, we were soaking in a hot tub overlooking the Mississippi river.

I was scrolling VRBO and Google maps looking for a last-minute cabin with a hot tub somewhere in Wisconsin, and Eagle Roost Resort in Cassville, WI kept coming up — right on the Mississippi River, off-season pricing, and a hot tub on the deck overlooking the water.

That was enough. I booked it, packed the truck Friday morning, and we were on the road by 1:30pm.

What I found when I got there was one of the better weekend escapes I’ve had in this part of the Midwest — not perfect, there was a quirky arrival situation I’ll tell you about, but the kind of place where you sit on the deck with coffee in the morning watching bald eagles and barges drift by, and you genuinely forget what day it is.

This review covers Rivers Edge Cabin 9, the specific unit we stayed in at Eagle Roost Resort.

First Impressions: Arriving at Eagle Roost Resort Cassville WI

The drive into Cassville alone is worth noting — you come in off Highway 133 through the bluffs and the Mississippi River valley opens up in front of you. Drive through the historic downtown area and turn on Jack Oak Rd following the river and Eagle Roost Resort is sitting right there on the water waiting for you.

It’s a small, quiet property — 6 cabins and a motel — and when Michelle and I pulled in during the off-season, only two other cabins were occupied. We essentially had the place to ourselves.

Check-in was as low-key as it gets. The door was unlocked, the key was on the kitchen table. No front desk, no paperwork. The owner lives two houses down from the resort, which turned out to matter more than I expected.

The arrival didn’t go without hiccups: when I walked into the cabin, there was a strong smell — like chlorine — and the air felt harsh on my throat. Turns out the owner had been running an ozone machine to clean the cabin and forgot to remove it before we checked in. I called him, and he was there within minutes, pulled the machine, and that was the end of it. One issue, handled immediately. For the rest of the stay, zero problems.

It set an odd tone for the first hour, but the owner’s response actually gave me more confidence in the place — not less.

The view from the deck, on the other hand, made the whole ozone thing a distant memory.

Rivers Edge Cabin — What You Actually Get

The Cabin

Cabin 9 is a straightforward, comfortable cabin — not large, but well-suited for two people. The layout is clean and functional, and the cabin itself was noticeably well-kept. Nothing felt worn out or neglected.

There are two bedrooms and it sleeps 2–3 people comfortably — ideal for a couple, workable for three, but tight beyond that.

The Kitchen and Basics

We brought an egg bake and some snacks but honestly never cooked once. The kitchen is small and has what you’d need for the basics, but this isn’t a place you’ll want to spend making a full course meal. The whole pull of the cabin is the deck and the river.

Coffee setup is a standard 12-cup pot with filters and cups provided. We brought our own coffee grounds and Yeti and made coffee each morning before heading outside — which is the only place you’ll want to be anyway.

The Outdoor Space and Hot Tub

This is where the stay delivers.

The hot tub is rectangular, newer, and easily one of the better ones I’ve been in — it faces the river directly, fits two comfortably, and could handle three. We got in both nights, and watching the stars from the hot tub with the Mississippi in front of you is the moment that makes this stay.

The deck is spacious enough for chairs with an unobstructed view up and down the river — Saturday morning I sat out there with coffee for over an hour watching wood ducks, Canada geese, and at least two bald eagles working the tree line. And at one point, a barge came through moving faster than I expected as it headed back south —  the views alone are worth staying here. Don’t forget to bring binoculars!

Sleep Quality and Comfort

Slept well both nights. The off-season quiet helps — the resort was nearly empty and Cassville itself is a small, slow-paced town. And no road noise to speak of.

The temperature in the cabin was easy to manage. It was a chilly weekend and the cabin stayed comfortable throughout.

The Property — Beyond the Cabin

Eagle Roost Resort is small by design, and that’s part of what makes it work. Six cabins, a motel section, swimming pool, playground, and a marina.

The property doesn’t feel like a resort in the commercial sense — it feels more like a well-run riverside escape run by someone who actually cares about the place.

The marina is a real draw if you’re coming with a boat. You can bring your own and dock it, or rent one directly from the resort. There’s also a fishing dock if you just want to drop a line without leaving the property.

The wooded area near the marina had a pair of wood ducks nesting there — I stumbled on them Sunday morning while walking the property before checkout. It’s a small detail, but it’s that kind of place.

Off-season is the smart time to book. The value is noticeably better, the property is quiet, and you get the river essentially to yourself. If you want peace without crowds, mid-week or shoulder season is the right time to go. This has been one of the best budget travel destinations I have booked.

The cabins are spaced far enough apart that you never feel like you’re on top of your neighbors — a small thing that makes a real difference on a quiet weekend.

What’s Nearby — Making the Most of Your Cassville WI Stay

Cassville has a lot to offer for a town this size. Within a few minutes of the resort you have dining options, a solid bar scene, and enough outdoor draws to fill a full weekend.

For dinner, Moon’s Town Pump is worth checking out — old-school Wisconsin bar, free peanuts, a wall of whiskey, and a Wagyu burger that holds up.

After dinner, we walked next door to the Elm Tree Bar and that’s worth a stop too.

J&J Sand Bar Lounge & Lanes is the bigger sit-down restaurant in town. Huge portion sizes — the prime rib was easily twice as big as I expected — but the seasoning on the meat was underwhelming.

Driftless Coffee Co — we went here on Sunday morning. I highly recommend stopping here. Strong dark roast, good breakfast options. We just wished we’d gone here on Saturday too.

Just two miles from the resort, Nelson Dewey State Park has bluff-top views over the Mississippi valley, short hiking trails, and bald eagles circling overhead. It’s a compact park but the bluff views and wildlife make it feel like more — well worth the short drive.

If you’re driving down from the North or planning to extend the trip, Trempealeau, WI is worth a stop on the way home. It’s another Mississippi River town with its own charm — great food, a historic hotel bar, and one of the most underrated state parks in Wisconsin. My Things to Do in Trempealeau WI guide has everything you need to make it worth the detour.

The Honest Take

What genuinely impressed me was the combination of the hot tub, the deck, the river access, and the owner’s responsiveness — four things that are easy to take for granted until you stay somewhere that gets all of them right.

The ozone machine situation was annoying at first. The owner’s response to it — immediate, no-excuse, just fixed it — was exactly what you want from a small property owner. That matters.

The location is hard to beat. You’re right on the Mississippi, the bluffs are out your front window, and the wildlife shows up without any effort on your part.

What could be better: the cabin interior is functional but unremarkable. If you’re comparing this to a high-end VRBO with designer finishes and a stocked kitchen, it won’t win that comparison. That’s not what this is. This is a clean, well-maintained river cabin where the experience happens outside.

Cabin 9 is best for couples who want a low-key river escape — hot tub, wildlife, a couple of good local bars, and zero agenda. It’s not the right fit if you need a lot of indoor space, modern amenities, or a full kitchen setup for cooking.

One last thing worth knowing: if you’re traveling with a family or a larger group, Eagle Roost has bigger cabins available — Cabin 9 isn’t the only option on the property.

If you want to compare options before booking, the Ferryville area has a couple of solid cabin rentals with hot tubs right on the Mississippi that are worth a look. I’ve stayed there and would recommend it — check back soon for a full review.

Is Eagle Roost Resort Cassville WI Worth It? — FAQs

Is Eagle Roost Resort worth the price?

Yes — especially in the off-season. The combination of river location, hot tub (cabin 9), and responsive ownership at that price point is genuinely hard to find. You’re paying for the view and the access, and both deliver.

What is the best unit at Eagle Roost Resort?

We stayed in Cabin 9 (Rivers Edge) and can speak directly to that experience. The deck placement and hot tub orientation on that unit are excellent. The resort also offers a motel section if you’re looking for a simpler, lower-cost option on the same property.

Is Eagle Roost Resort good for couples?

Yes. Cabin 9 is sized perfectly for two, the hot tub is ideal for a couple, and the quiet off-season vibe lends itself to a genuine reset. It’s not a party resort — it’s a slow-down-and-breathe resort.

What is check-in like at Eagle Roost Resort?

Fully self-check-in. The door is unlocked when you arrive and the key is waiting inside. The owner lives nearby and is reachable if anything comes up — as we found out firsthand.

Can you see bald eagles from Eagle Roost Resort?

Yes, regularly. I spotted them from the deck both mornings — perched in the tree line and flying over the river. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Ready to Book?

Eagle Roost Resort doesn’t try to be more than it is — and that’s exactly why it works. A clean cabin, a great hot tub, the Mississippi right in front of you, and a property owner two minutes away if you need anything — for a Midwest weekend escape, that’s a hard combination to beat.
