Cassville sits along the Mississippi River in southwestern Wisconsin, about 25 minutes north of Potosi and 50 minutes from Dubuque, Iowa. It’s an easy stop along the Great River Road and a great base for exploring Wisconsin’s Driftless Area.

Ride the Cassville Car Ferry
The Cassville Car Ferry is one of the most unique things to do in Cassville WI. Whether you’re crossing into Iowa or simply riding over and back for the experience. It’s an easy way to spend an hour while enjoying views of the Mississippi River that you won’t get from a bridge.
The ferry has connected Cassville, Wisconsin, and Millville, Iowa, since 1836, making it the oldest operating ferry in Wisconsin. You don’t need a destination in mind to enjoy it. Many visitors ride across the river, snap a few photos, and board the next trip back simply because it’s a fun piece of local history.
The ferry typically operates daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day. With reduced Friday through Sunday service in May, September, and October, river conditions permitting.
It’s cash only, and fares are generally around $20 per vehicle, $10 per motorcycle, and $5 for walk-on passengers and bicycles. Before heading out, check the Cassville Car Ferry website for current hours and river conditions, as high water occasionally forces temporary closures.
Tip: If you’re planning to continue into Iowa, leave yourself a little extra time. There’s only one ferry on the route, so if you arrive just after it departs, the wait can approach an hour during busy weekends.
Float the Grant River Tubing
If you’re visiting during the summer, tubing the Grant River is one of the best outdoor activities near Cassville WI.
It’s a relaxing way to spend a few hours floating through the Driftless Area, with wooded bluffs, peaceful stretches of river, and just enough current to keep things interesting.
Two local outfitters—Grant River Tubing Company and Y’Allbee Tubin—offer tubing trips just a short drive from town.
Most floats last about 2½ to 3 hours, and both companies provide tube rentals, cooler tubes, and shuttle service. Since they’re small, family-run businesses, it’s a good idea to reserve your trip in advance.
The river is calm enough for a laid-back afternoon while still offering a few fun, faster-moving sections. Both outfitters also earn high marks for their friendly service and flexibility when weather affects plans.
Tip: Tubing is generally available from Memorial Day through early September. Download directions before you leave town, since cell service can be spotty and GPS doesn’t always lead directly to the river access points.
Hike the Bluffs at Nelson Dewey State Park
If you’re looking for scenic views without committing to a long hike, Nelson Dewey State Park is one of the best places to visit near Cassville.
Located just two miles outside town, the park combines bluff-top overlooks, short hiking trails, and one of the best views of the Mississippi River Valley in the area.
I visited the park during my trip to Cassville, and it quickly became one of my favorite stops. After driving the park road to the Prairie Picnic Area, I was greeted by sweeping views of the river valley while eagles circled overhead almost the entire time I was there. It didn’t take long to see why this park is one of the area’s highlights.
The park has five short trails totaling about two miles, with individual hikes ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 miles. I walked the Cedar Point Trail, an easy 0.2-mile path that follows the bluff edge overlooking Stonefield Historic Site.
If you have extra time, Stonefield Historic Site is well worth adding to your itinerary. It’s much larger than it appears from the road.
Nelson Dewey also has a quiet, wooded campground with 45 campsites, including 18 electric sites and several walk-to sites overlooking the river valley.
A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required to enter the park. If you’re planning to spend more time hiking or camping in the state, an annual pass is usually worth considering.

One of the things I enjoyed most about Cassville is how easy it is to get outside. Whether you’re boating, fishing, kayaking, or simply taking in the views along the Mississippi River, outdoor recreation is a big part of the experience.
Riverside Park is a great place to start. Located near the ferry landing, it features a public boat launch, dock, and a wildlife observation area where you have a good chance of spotting bald eagles, great blue herons, and barges traveling the Mississippi.
If you don’t have your own equipment, Eagle’s Roost Resort also offers boat rentals.
Fishing is another popular activity in the area. The Mississippi River and its backwaters are known for walleye, bass, catfish, and panfish, while the surrounding public lands attract hunters during Wisconsin’s deer, turkey, and waterfowl seasons.
If you’re looking for a quieter place to launch, several public river access points are located around the area, giving anglers and paddlers additional ways to get out on the water.
McCartney Landing, Bertom Lake Boat Landing, Schleicher’s Landing, and Lynn Hollow Boat Landing all give you river access outside the main part of town.
For families, the Penny & Myra Eckstein Memorial Swimming Pool is a great summer option, especially for younger kids who aren’t ready for the Mississippi’s current.
Don’t forget to bring a pair of binoculars. During my visit, I spotted bald eagles, waterfowl, and turkey vultures at both Riverside Park and Nelson Dewey State Park, making birdwatching another rewarding way to enjoy Cassville’s outdoor scenery.
Best Day Trips Near Cassville WI
One of the best things about visiting Cassville is how many worthwhile attractions are just a short drive away. If you have an extra day—or even a few extra hours—these nearby destinations make great additions to your itinerary.
Visit Potosi Brewing Company
Located about 15 minutes from Cassville, Potosi Brewing Company is one of my favorite breweries in Wisconsin. Stop in for lunch, sample locally brewed beer, and explore the National Brewery Museum and Great River Road Interpretive Center.

Just across the street from the brewery, Whispering Bluffs Winery is an easy stop for a wine tasting. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, and locally produced wines, making it a perfect pairing with a visit to Potosi Brewing Company.

About 30 minutes from Cassville, the Dickeyville Grotto is one of Wisconsin’s most unique landmarks. Built by Father Matthias Wernerus using stone, shells, glass, and other materials from around the world, it’s a fascinating stop that’s well worth the short drive.

I visited during the off-season and loved the quiet atmosphere, lower lodging prices, and having many places almost entirely to ourselves.
How long to stay
I recommend spending two nights in Cassville. That gives you enough time to explore Nelson Dewey State Park, ride the ferry, enjoy a meal or two in town, and still make side trips to Potosi and Dickeyville without feeling rushed.
If you only have one day, focus on Nelson Dewey State Park, the ferry (when it’s operating), and one of Cassville’s local restaurants.
Getting around
Downtown Cassville is easy to explore on foot, but you’ll definitely want a vehicle if you plan to visit Nelson Dewey State Park, Potosi, Dickeyville, or other attractions around the area.
Avoiding crowds
One of the nice things about Cassville is that it rarely feels crowded, even during the summer. For an even quieter experience, consider visiting on weekdays or during the shoulder seasons in May or September.

Between hiking the bluffs at Nelson Dewey State Park, riding the historic car ferry, exploring Potosi’s brewery and winery, and discovering places like the Dickeyville Grotto, the weekend felt far more full than I expected.
Cassville is a great destination for couples looking for a relaxing getaway, families who enjoy spending time outdoors, and anyone road-tripping the Great River Road who wants to experience one of Wisconsin’s smaller Mississippi River towns.
If you’re looking for nightlife, shopping districts, or a packed itinerary, you’ll probably be happier in a larger destination.
