By Brian Dohrn | Dohrn Travels | Restaurants in Cassville WI

If you’re searching for the best restaurants in Cassville WI, you might be wondering whether a town of fewer than 1,000 people actually has anywhere worth eating.

I had the same question before spending a weekend in Cassville exploring the Mississippi River, Nelson Dewey State Park, and the surrounding Driftless Area.

What I found surprised me.

Over the course of the weekend, I ate at local bars, grabbed coffee from a small-town café, explored nearby breweries and wineries, and talked with locals about where they go when they want a good meal. Some places exceeded expectations, while others were better for the atmosphere than the food. Either way, I left with a much better understanding of where visitors should spend their time and money.

This guide covers the restaurants and bars I personally visited, along with a few well-known local spots I researched while planning my trip.

Whether you’re staying in Cassville for a weekend getaway, camping at Nelson Dewey State Park, driving the Great River Road, or simply looking for a place to eat near the Mississippi River, you’ll find the best options here.

Where to Eat: Best Bars and Restaurants in Cassville WI

During my weekend in Cassville, I made it a point to try several local spots and explore what the town had to offer. Some of these places I visited personally, while others are included because they’re consistently recommended by locals and travelers. If you’re planning a weekend around Nelson Dewey State Park, the Mississippi River, or a cabin stay, these are the restaurants and bars worth knowing about.

Moon’s Town Pump — My Favorite Restaurant in Cassville (Visited)

If you’re only going to eat at one place in Cassville, Moon’s Town Pump would be my recommendation.

Moon’s Town Pump is an old-school Wisconsin tavern — long bar, pool table in the back, pull tabs, road signs from the Cassville area covering the walls. Small kitchen up front. The kind of place that doesn’t look like much from the outside but delivers once you’re sitting at the bar.

They serve free peanuts! Crack the shells, throw them on the floor — messy in the best possible way. The beer selection is solid, and the whiskey wall is something else. A lot of bottles I’d never seen before, which says something for a bar this size.

I had the Bigfoot Bleu Bacon Wagyu Burger. It was a little heavy on the blue cheese sauce for my taste, but the meat was juicy, the grilled mushrooms and onions were the right call, and the bacon pulled the whole thing together. Good burger.

The bartender was friendly, easy to talk to, and kept things moving without rushing us out. They also run daily specials — all-you-can-eat wings on Fridays starting at 4pm, prime rib on Saturdays.

Moon’s Town Pump | 118 E Amelia St, Cassville, WI | (608) 725-5175

J&J Sand Bar — Big Portions, Know What You’re Getting (Visited)

J&J is the larger, more modern option in town — lots of seating, brighter interior, the kind of place that can handle a crowd.

On Saturday nights they run a prime rib special, and people come in from surrounding towns for it. They also do a Friday seafood buffet and Sunday brunch that both have strong local followings.

I ordered the prime rib on a Saturday. The portion was enormous — looked more like a 32-ounce cut than the 16-ounce advertised, and every table around me had the same story. The size was impressive. The flavor, though, was under seasoned and didn’t match the scale of the cut.

The prime rib wasn’t my favorite, but portion sizes were impressive and other diners around me seemed happy with their meals. Given the popularity of the Sunday brunch, I’d be interested in trying J&J again on a future visit.

J&J Sand Bar  | 1110 E Amelia St, Cassville, WI | (608) 725-5055

Son Chasers Social Club — Best Bet for Families (Not Personally Visited)

Son Chasers Social Club is Cassville’s first social club-style bar and restaurant, and it has a solid reputation with both locals and visitors.

They serve food (the menu has been called one of the best in town by regulars), host live music events, and have an outdoor tiki beer garden for drinking and dining outside.

Reviews consistently highlight the friendly owner and staff, the pet-friendly patio, and the variety of menu options. If you’re traveling with kids or want something with a little more energy than a standard tavern, this is the one to check out.

Closed Mondays and Thursdays based on last known hours — confirm before driving in.

Driftless Coffee Co — Best Coffee Shop in Cassville WI (Visited)

If you’re an early riser or leaving town on a Sunday morning, Driftless Coffee Co is worth going out of your way for.

Strong dark roast made well. After two days in this small river town, it was exactly what I needed — and I kicked myself for not finding it on Saturday morning instead of Sunday, the day we headed back home.

They also serve breakfast and sandwiches. While I only stopped in for coffee, the shop had a welcoming small-town feel and quickly became one of my favorite stops of the weekend.

If you’re heading out to Nelson Dewey State Park or starting a day on the Great River Road, this is a great place to begin the morning.

Staying overnight? I spent the weekend at Eagle Roost Resort on the Mississippi River. Read my full review to see what the cabins, hot tubs, and river views are really like.

Elm Tree Bar — A Relaxed Local Favorite (Visited)

The Elm Tree Bar sits right next door to Moon’s Town Pump and its newer — recently remodeled with an old wood bar top, mirrored back bar, and decorative tin ceilings. Narrow and long like most Wisconsin small-town bars, but darker and more laid back than the Pump.

It feels less like a destination bar and more like the place locals settle into after dinner. That’s part of its appeal. If Moon’s is lively, Elm Tree feels a little quieter and more relaxed.

We went after dinner for a drink. Pool table in the back, pull tabs, low-lit room. It’s more of a settle-in-for-a-second-round spot than a dinner destination. If you want a quieter end to the night after Moon’s, this is the natural next stop.

Elm Tree Bar | 116 E Amelia St, Cassville, WI | (608) 725-9001

Tway’s Lighthouse Lounge — A Local Bar Worth Knowing (Not Personally Visited)

Tway’s Lighthouse Lounge is a bar on Amelia Street that’s been part of the local scene for a while. Based on what’s available online, it’s a no-frills neighborhood bar — they serve locally made pizza, host live music events and meat raffles, and have a small but active following on Facebook. Reviews call out the good times and the casual atmosphere.

I didn’t make it in on my visit, but it’s on the list for next time. If you’re in town for a weekend and want to see what’s on the entertainment calendar, their Facebook page is the best place to check.

Tway’s Lighthouse Lounge | 117 E Amelia St, Cassville, WI | (608) 725-9053

WhiteTail Bluff Restaurant — A Fish Fry Worth Checking Out (Not Personally Visited)

WhiteTail Bluff sits on the bluffs east of Cassville and is primarily a campground and resort, but its on-site restaurant is open to the public. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a popular Friday fish fry and weekend specials that draw both campers and locals.

I haven’t eaten here personally, but online reviews consistently praise the food and friendly service. If you’re staying at the resort or exploring the bluffs east of town, it’s a convenient option that saves you a drive back into Cassville.

WhiteTail Bluff Campground & Resort | 8973 Irish Ridge Rd, Cassville, WI | (608) 725-5577

McCartney Corners — A Road Trip Bar You Must Stop Visit (Visited)

McCartney Corners sits a few miles outside of town and doesn’t look like much from the road. Don’t let that fool you — inside it’s a genuinely nice bar. Wood-paneled walls and ceiling, long bar, covered patio with a heater. Classic Wisconsin exterior that hides a solid interior, which is basically the defining trait of small-town Wisconsin bars.

We stopped for a couple of drinks and pulled some pull tabs. We somehow hit two $99 pull-tab winners during the same stop, which made it a memorable stop for reasons beyond the beer. Friendly bartender, friendly regulars, and bar food on the menu if you need a quick bite.

Restaurants and Bars Near Cassville WI Worth the Drive

One thing I learned during this trip is that you shouldn’t limit yourself to Cassville alone. Within a 15- to 20-minute drive you’ll find a brewery, winery, and several local bars that expand your options considerably. If you’re making a weekend out of the area, these nearby stops are worth adding to the itinerary.

Potosi Brewing Company — Best Brewery Near Cassville WI (Visited)

Potosi Brewing Company deserves more than a quick mention. If you’re considering a visit, I put together a full review covering the brewery, museum, food, and what to expect before you go.

If I had to recommend one food-and-drink stop near Cassville, Potosi Brewing Company would probably be it.

The building itself is worth seeing. From the outside, the limestone and red brick give it the feel of a historic brewery, while inside it’s surprisingly large, clean, and well-lit. Under one roof you’ll find the brew pub and restaurant, the National Brewery Museum, a transportation museum, and a gift shop, making it easy to spend a couple of hours here rather than just stopping for a meal.

I started with a flight of six beers. The Witsconsin and Catfish Lager were my favorites, while the Low Tide Glow and Vanilla Porter weren’t really my style. Even if beer isn’t your thing, don’t skip the root beer. It’s dark, rich, and one of the better craft root beers I’ve had.

For food, the beer cheese soup was a standout and worth ordering. I also tried the Reuben, which was good overall, though I’d recommend getting the sauce on the side. Beyond the food and drinks, I appreciated the atmosphere. The bar is beautifully crafted, with carved beer bottles and glasses worked directly into the woodwork, giving the space a unique character that fits the brewery’s history.

Potosi Brewing Company | 209 S Main St, Potosi, WI | (608) 763-4002

Whispering Bluffs Winery — Best Winery Near Cassville WI (Visited)

If you’re at Potosi Brewery, walk across the street to Whispering Bluffs Winery. They grow their own grapes, and the selection runs from sweet whites to drier reds to dessert wines. The server was knowledgeable and steered us toward good pours without being pushy about it.

The standout was the Scarlet Tanager — a raspberry wine that smells and tastes exactly like raspberry jam. Worth trying even if you’re not a dessert wine person. The bottle labels are hand-painted bird illustrations by the owner, which is a nice detail. We left with four bottles. They make good gifts.

Whispering Bluffs Winery | 196 S Main St, Potosi, WI | (608) 763-2468

If wine tasting is one of the reasons you’re visiting Potosi, there’s a lot more to see than I can cover here. Want a closer look at the wines, tasting room, and bird-themed labels? Read my full Whispering Bluffs Winery review before your visit.

I Don’t Care Pub & Grub — Local Find Worth the Detour (Not Personally Visited)

I Don’t Care Pub & Grub sits in Glen Haven along Highway 133 between Cassville and Bloomington, making it an easy stop if you’re exploring the back roads of Grant County. From the outside it looks like a simple small-town tavern, but it’s built a strong reputation among locals for its burgers, Friday fish fry, and friendly atmosphere.

Online reviews consistently mention the fresh beef burgers, generous portions, and welcoming service. It’s the kind of place that seems to attract both regulars and travelers looking for an authentic Wisconsin bar-and-grill experience rather than a tourist stop.

I haven’t eaten here personally, but if you’re driving between Cassville and Bloomington, this is one of the places that repeatedly showed up during my research. The name may suggest otherwise, but plenty of people seem to care about the food.

I Don’t Care Pub & Grub | 11050 Co Rd V, Glen Haven, WI | (608) 794-2240

Valley Pub — Beetown’s Dive Bar to Checkout (Not Personally Visited)

Valley Pub is located in Beetown, about 15 minutes east of Cassville, and has built a reputation as one of those small-town Wisconsin bars that locals quietly swear by. They embrace the dive bar label, but reviews suggest the food is better than many visitors expect.

The menu focuses on classic bar-and-grill favorites, with reviewers frequently mentioning the burgers, sandwiches, and generous portions. They also serve breakfast all day, offer daily specials, and keep the kitchen open as long as the bar is open—something that’s increasingly hard to find in small towns.

I haven’t visited Valley Pub myself, but it stood out during my research because it offers something a little different from the bars in Cassville. Between the food and loyal local following it feels like the kind of place road trippers stumble across and end up talking about later.

The Honest Take on Eating and Drinking in Cassville WI

If you’re coming to Cassville expecting a major dining scene, you’ll probably leave disappointed. If you’re coming for a weekend on the river, a cabin getaway, or a Great River Road trip, you’ll likely leave pleasantly surprised.

What the town does have is a collection of genuine small-town Wisconsin bars — the kind that still serve free peanuts, have bartenders who actually talk to you, and run weekly specials that locals plan their weekends around.

Moon’s Town Pump is the clear standout for food quality and atmosphere. Driftless Coffee Co is a legit find. Son Chasers fills a different niche as the family-friendly, live music option. J&J handles volume well.

The real move is pairing Cassville with Potosi. Potosi Brewing Company and Whispering Bluffs Winery together make for a legitimate half-day food and drink itinerary.

Add I Don’t Care or Valley Pub if you’re in exploration mode on the back roads.

Who should skip this: If you’re expecting a restaurant scene with multiple dinner options, a wine bar, high-end restaurant, or any kind of late-night food scene past 9pm, manage expectations. Hours are limited off-season. This is a road trip food stop built around solid small town bars and restaurants — and that’s a good thing if you know what you’re walking into.

Planning Your Visit — What to Know Before You Go

A little planning goes a long way in Cassville. Because it’s a small town, restaurant hours can vary by season and some kitchens close earlier than visitors might expect. Several spots reduce their hours in the off-season, so it’s worth checking Facebook or calling ahead before planning dinner.

Moon’s Town Pump is your most reliable option for consistent hours (open from 8:30am most days). Son Chasers is closed Mondays and Thursdays. WhiteTail Bluff’s restaurant is accessible to non-campers but confirm hours before driving out.

If you’re making a full day of it, here’s the sequence I’d run: coffee at Driftless Coffee Co in the morning, drive to Potosi Brewing Company for lunch and Whispering Bluffs Winery right after. Back in Cassville for drinks and dinner at Moon’s Town Pump, then Elm Tree Bar for a nightcap. If you want a detour, McCartney Corners or Valley Pub on the way back.

Saturday night at Moon’s Town Pump and J&J both run prime rib specials — plan to arrive early if that’s the goal. The Friday fish fry at J&J and WhiteTail Bluff are both popular enough to draw people in from outside town.

If you’re spending a weekend in Cassville, consider adding the Dickeyville Grotto to your itinerary — it’s one of the most unusual roadside attractions in Wisconsin.
