SE 17th Street / Port Everglades – Closest to the Cruise Port

The SE 17th Street area is one of the most convenient places to stay before a cruise from Port Everglades. You’re close to the terminals, Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL), and several restaurants and stores for last-minute supplies.

This area is more about convenience than a beach vacation. There are plenty of places to grab dinner or pick up something you forgot to pack, but you’ll need a ride to reach the beach or most of Fort Lauderdale’s attractions.

Why I’d Stay Here

We’ve stayed at both the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina and Embassy Suites on SE 17th Street. For our Holland America cruises departing from Terminal 26, staying in this area has made embarkation morning pretty straightforward.

You’re close to the port, so there’s no need to plan a long transfer across town. Just allow extra time for traffic and getting through port security.

Best For: Travelers arriving the day before their cruise who want a convenient hotel, nearby restaurants, and an easy trip to the terminals.

Good to Know: The SE 17th Street area is walkable around many hotels, restaurants, and stores, but the cruise terminals themselves aren’t practical walking destinations. Plan on taking a rideshare, taxi, or hotel shuttle if available.

Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) / Dania Beach – Best for Overnight Stays

Staying near Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) or in Dania Beach makes sense when you’re flying in late or only need a hotel for one night before or after your cruise. You’ll find plenty of airport hotels, restaurants, and shopping nearby, often at lower prices than beachfront properties.

This area is more about convenience than sightseeing. Some hotels are within walking distance of restaurants and shopping, especially around Dania Pointe, but you’ll generally need a car or rideshare to explore Fort Lauderdale Beach or downtown.

Why I’d Stay Here

We’ve stayed at both the Hilton Garden Inn Fort Lauderdale Airport–Cruise Port and Marriott Fort Lauderdale Airport for one-night stays after our cruises. Both worked well for what we needed: a comfortable place to sleep and a convenient location near restaurants and the airport.

Before one of our cruises, our flight was delayed, and we didn’t arrive at our hotel until around 1 a.m. Having a hotel close to the airport made a big difference. After a long travel day, the last thing we wanted was another lengthy ride across town.

Best For: Travelers arriving late, catching an early flight after their cruise, or looking for a convenient one-night stay without paying beachfront hotel prices.

Good to Know: Many airport-area hotels offer complimentary airport shuttles, but that doesn’t necessarily include transportation to Port Everglades. Check both services before booking, especially if you’re arriving late at night.

Fort Lauderdale Beach – Best for a Pre-Cruise Beach Stay

Fort Lauderdale Beach is a great choice when you want a little vacation time before or after your cruise. You’ve got the ocean, palm-lined sidewalks, beachfront restaurants, and plenty of places to explore without needing a car.

It’s a different experience from staying near the airport or cruise port. Instead of just spending the night, you can enjoy the beach, grab dinner overlooking the water, and relax before boarding your ship.

Why I’d Stay Here

We’ve stayed at Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach – DoubleTree by Hilton, right across from the beach. The property felt a little dated during our stay, but the location was hard to beat.

We could walk to the beach, grab coffee in the morning, and find nearby restaurants without needing a car. For us, that convenience made up for the older rooms.

Best For: Couples, first-time Fort Lauderdale visitors, and travelers adding an extra night or two before or after their cruise.

Good to Know: Beachfront hotels typically cost more than airport-area properties, especially during peak travel periods. You’ll also need to allow more time to reach Port Everglades on embarkation morning.

For a quick overnight stay, I’d probably choose somewhere closer to the cruise port. But with an extra day to enjoy Fort Lauderdale, the beach area would be high on my list.

Downtown Fort Lauderdale / Las Olas – Best for Dining and Exploring

Downtown Fort Lauderdale is a good alternative to staying near the cruise port or directly on the beach. Around Las Olas Boulevard and the Riverwalk, you’ll find restaurants, shops, bars, and places to explore on foot.

It’s a nice option when you have an afternoon or evening the day before your cruise and don’t want to spend that time sitting around the hotel. You can grab dinner along Las Olas, walk by the New River, or explore the downtown area without needing a car for every stop.

Why I’d Consider Staying Here

I’d consider staying downtown if I had extra time to explore the city, try a few restaurants, and enjoy the area before boarding.

The tradeoff is that you’re farther from the cruise terminals than the SE 17th Street hotels, and you’ll need a ride to reach Fort Lauderdale Beach. Hotel parking can also be expensive, so check those fees if you’re driving.

Best For: Couples, weekend travelers, and anyone wanting restaurants, shopping, and a walkable area before or after their cruise.

Good to Know: Walkability depends on where your hotel is located. Staying close to Las Olas Boulevard or the Riverwalk makes it easier to explore on foot, while hotels farther from those areas may require more rideshares.

The area has a different feel from the busier sections of Fort Lauderdale Beach. You can spend the morning walking along the ocean, grab lunch at a beachfront restaurant, or just relax without needing to plan much.

Why I’d Stay Here

We’ve stayed at the Hollywood Beach Marriott, located right along the Broadwalk. One of the biggest advantages of staying here is having the beach and restaurants within walking distance.

For travelers who want some beach time without staying in the middle of Fort Lauderdale’s busier beachfront area, Hollywood Beach is worth considering.

Best For: Couples, families, and travelers adding an extra day or two who prefer a more relaxed beachfront stay.

Good to Know: Hollywood Beach is farther from Port Everglades than the SE 17th Street area, so plan on taking a rideshare or taxi to your cruise terminal. Allow extra time on embarkation morning, especially during busy cruise weekends.
