Southern Caribbean Holiday Sailing on the Rotterdam

If you’re considering a Holland America ABC Islands Cruise, this guide walks you through exactly what to expect — onboard and in port — so you can decide if it fits your travel style.

We sailed the 9-day Southern Caribbean holiday cruise aboard the Rotterdam with Holland America Line, round-trip from Fort Lauderdale. It was our fourth consecutive holiday sailing with Holland America and our third time on this ship — so we understood the rhythm before stepping onboard.

This guide breaks down the full experience — ship atmosphere, specialty dining, port strategy, snorkeling highlights, golf cart logistics, and what’s actually worth your limited time in each destination.

No hype. Just firsthand perspective.

Holland America ABC Islands Cruise at a Glance

Best For: Couples, relaxed cruisers, beach or snorkeling enthusiasts, midsize ship fans
Time Needed: 9–12 days ideal
Budget Level: Moderate to premium
Effort Level: Easy onboard / Easy to moderate on port days
Overall Vibe: Laid-back, mature crowd, scenic, warm, Caribbean-focused

This isn’t a high-energy party cruise.
It isn’t a mega-ship packed with water slides and attractions.

The Rotterdam is a comfortable midsize ship known for strong service and well-paced Southern Caribbean itineraries.

Why Choose a Holland America ABC Islands Cruise?

The ABC Islands — Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao — sit outside the hurricane belt. That means more consistent winter weather, calmer seas, and fewer last-minute itinerary disruptions.

For travelers booking a holiday sailing, that reliability matters.

Here’s what makes this itinerary stand out:

  • Consistently warm, dry weather
  • Clear, calm waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling
  • Excellent shore-access snorkeling, especially in Bonaire
  • A distinctive Dutch-Caribbean cultural blend
  • Longer port times (especially in Curaçao)

Pair that with Holland America’s midsize ships, and the experience feels noticeably calmer than most mega-ship sailings.

Public spaces rarely felt crowded or chaotic. Service was consistently strong. The crowd generally skewed older and more relaxed.

If you’re looking for nonstop nightlife and high-energy entertainment, this likely isn’t your cruise.

If you prefer a slower pace, scenic port days, and a relaxed onboard atmosphere, it’s a strong fit.

Best Things to Do on a Holland America ABC Islands Cruise

Curaçao on a Holland America ABC Islands Cruise

Grote Knip Beach (Knippa Beach Transfer)

One of the most commonly booked cruise excursions in Curaçao is the transfer to Grote Knip Beach.

We used part of our Have It All excursion credit for this option because we wanted a simple, no-planning beach day. If you prefer organized logistics and guaranteed return transportation, this is an easy choice — but there are trade-offs.

The bus ride is about 50–60 minutes each way, which means roughly two hours of your port day is spent in transit. The scenery along the way is interesting — cactus-covered hills and rolling coastline — but it’s still time away from the water.

What Works Well

  • Stunning turquoise water
  • Scenic cliff-top viewpoints
  • Calm swimming conditions
  • Easy logistics through the ship excursion

The water clarity here is excellent. From the overlook above the beach, the view alone makes the trip feel worthwhile.

Limitations to Know

  • 50–60-minute bus ride each way
  • Worn loungers
  • Paid bathrooms
  • Steps down to the beach
  • Uneven terrain and coral
  • Limited amenities

This is not a resort-style beach experience. Amenities are basic, and mobility can be a concern due to stairs and uneven footing.

Snorkeling Reality

The center of the beach has a sandy bottom — which means limited marine life. The better snorkeling is along the rocky cliff walls where structure attracts fish. Water clarity was excellent, and the current manageable, but this is not Curaçao’s strongest snorkeling location.

Would I Do It Again?

Probably not.

It’s undeniably beautiful, but I personally prefer beaches with stronger underwater structure and better amenities.

If you’re deciding between this and other Curaçao beach options, read my full breakdown below:

Evening in Willemstad

One of the advantages of this Holland America Southern Caribbean cruise is the late departure from Curaçao.

After the beach, we walked across the floating bridge and explored the lit-up waterfront in the evening. The pastel buildings glow at night, and it feels safe and walkable.

If you enjoy architecture, photos, and casual dining, staying out after dark here is worth it.

🌴 Looking for the Best Tours in Curacao?

Whether you’re visiting Curacao on a cruise or staying longer on the island, there are plenty of great tours to choose from—snorkeling trips, island tours, and off-road adventures that are easy to book and fit well into a port day. These popular experiences are a good option if you want to explore more without planning everything yourself.

Bonaire Highlights on the Holland America ABC Islands Cruise

Bonaire is the best port on this cruise for independent exploration — especially if snorkeling is a priority.

Unlike some Caribbean islands where transportation logistics can be complicated, Bonaire is compact, easy to navigate, and well-suited for self-guided exploration.

Instead of booking a cruise excursion, we rented a golf cart from Bonaire Cruisers and explored the north side of the island.

Renting a Bonaire Cruisers Golf Cart

We chose a Premium cart for this trip.

Here’s how it performed:

Pros:

  • Faster than the standard carts
  • Elevated seating position
  • More storage space

Cons:

  • Loud engine
  • Gas is not included
  • The most expensive option

The speed advantage was noticeable, especially on longer stretches of road. However, the noise level made conversation difficult at times.

If I did it again, I’d likely choose the Deluxe cart instead. It offers a quieter ride while still providing enough capability to explore the island comfortably.

If you’re considering renting, read my full breakdown here: Bonaire Cruisers Review: Easy Golf Cart Rental from Bonaire Cruise Port

Snorkeling at 1000 Steps

One of the most popular snorkeling sites in Bonaire is 1000 Steps.

Despite the name, there are only 67 steps down to the beach. The climb back up isn’t bad — unless you’re already tired from snorkeling.

What Makes It Special

  • Coral beach — water shoes strongly recommended
  • Warm, crystal-clear water
  • Abundant reef fish and marine life
  • Strong chance of spotting sea turtles

This is a true shore-access snorkel site. Once you’re in the water, structure and coral formations attract steady fish activity.

We saw sea turtle, parrotfish, trumpetfish, goatfish, and even an octopus blending into the coral. Visibility was excellent, and entry was manageable with proper footwear.

It’s one of the strongest snorkeling stops on the island.

If snorkeling is your priority, Bonaire alone makes this the best cruise to ABC islands worth considering.

Cadushy Distillery in Rincon

After snorkeling, we stopped at the Cadushy Distillery in Rincón.

We did a quick 10–15-minute tour and were given generous samples. The courtyard setting felt peaceful and shaded — a welcome break from the midday heat.

It exceeded expectations.

The staff was friendly, and the aged rum and whiskey were surprisingly good for such a small, local operation. If you enjoy local spirits or simply want a relaxed stop off the main road, this is an easy addition to your Bonaire day.

🌴 Looking for the Best Tours in Bonaire?

Whether you’re visiting Bonaire on a cruise or staying longer on the island, there are plenty of great tours to choose from—snorkeling trips, island tours, and off-road adventures that are easy to book and fit well into a port day. These popular experiences are a good option if you want to explore more without planning everything yourself.

Aruba Beach Day During the ABC Islands Cruise

In Aruba, we took a taxi from the cruise port to Eagle Beach.

The main drop-off area near Coco Loco was crowded, so we walked toward Costa Linda Beach Resort and settled near Water’s Edge Restaurant & Bar. That stretch of beach felt noticeably calmer and more comfortable.

Eagle Beach is ideal for:

  • Easy public beach access
  • Soft, powdery sand
  • Calm waters
  • Relaxed beach lounging

This is a classic Aruba beach day — wide shoreline, plenty of space, and gentle surf.

However, Eagle Beach is not a strong snorkeling location. The sandy bottom limits marine life, so if underwater exploration is your priority, you’ll want to look elsewhere.

If you’re looking for a low-effort, easy beach day close to the cruise port, Eagle Beach delivers.

🌴 Looking for the Best Tours in Aruba?

Whether you’re visiting Aruba on a cruise or staying longer on the island, there are plenty of great tours to choose from—snorkeling trips, island tours, and off-road adventures that are easy to book and fit well into a port day. These popular experiences are a good option if you want to explore more without planning everything yourself.

How to Plan Your Holland America ABC Islands Cruise

Fly in Early to Fort Lauderdale

We always fly in 1–2 days before departure. On this trip, our flight arrived at 1 a.m. due to delays — exactly why we build in buffer time.

Starting a cruise stressed and rushed sets the wrong tone. Flying in early gives you margin if something goes wrong and allows you to board relaxed.

Boarding at Port Everglades Terminal 26 was smooth, and we were onboard the Rotterdam by 10:30 a.m.

Find Port Everglades on Google Maps

Holland America’s Have It All Package

The Have It All package (around $60 per person per day) typically includes:

  • $100 shore excursion credit per person
  • Signature Beverage Package (up to 15 drinks per day)
  • One specialty dining credit
  • Surf Wi-Fi package

If you drink beer or liquor, order specialty coffee, and dine at a specialty restaurant once, it generally pencils out.

Pro tip: Ask specifically for premium liquor brands — they’re included but not always automatically poured.

Choosing a Verandah Cabin

We consistently book a Verandah cabin on Deck 8.

Why?

  • Morning balcony coffee
  • Port-day viewing
  • A quiet place to retreat

That private outdoor space changes the cruise experience — especially on scenic sail-ins.

If possible, avoid adjoining cabins. Noise carries more than you might expect.

  • Ask bartenders for premium liquor included in the Have It All package
  • Skip adjoining cabins if possible
  • Avoid the main drop-off area at Eagle Beach and walk toward the neighboring resort stretch
